Well, while Ill admit that there are venomous snakes in southern IL (some in northern IL, too), they wont bother you unless you bother them. If they swim up to your boat, theyre probably just passing by, or interested in your bait. They dont want anything to do with you, therefore they do not require being beaten with paddles.

Rattlesnakes are definitely in southern IL, but I wouldnt call them a "problem". Theyre so few and far between that sightings are rare, and I believe that both species of rattlesnake in IL are on the endangered species list (as far as the state goes).
