As an old timer of 65 - - or is it 66?
- - years of age, I think I have been to almost every area of Illinois. That's except the Shawnee National Forest. I once met a young mother and daughter who wanted to hide from her 'X' out in Calif. And so she had chosen Watertown, WI. But then I wondered about Goreville, IL located in the SNF. So is that area of SNF sustainable for life and employment? Or is it just a vast area of wasteland? Has anyone ever been down there with experiences they want to share? It would seem to me that if 'you' want to disappear from society, that would be the place to go. Another old timer pen pal once told me that many African - American people live down there. So do 'you' have any comments? ![]() Carter Glass |

Carter I hadn't heard of it until I read the posts of a thread requesting your top 3 favorite places to visit in Illinois. Shawnee National Forest was list 7 times, the most of any other place mentioned.
Tonight I spoke with a friend who goes there; he loves it as well. My understanding is the fall is the best time to go. If you go, I'd love to hear a review! |

Shawnee NF is gorgeous. Be sure to visit the Garden of the Gods. Just dont go lolly-gagging around the woods, there are TONS of cottonmouths and copperheads around, especially this time of year.

As is NW IL and central IL (near Ottawa). The rest of the state is cornfield wastelands. Peaceful, but ugly.

Down around that area is beautiful! I envy the SIU students that get to have all of that literally in their backyards. Who needs a dowtown area, when you have endless miles of nature and trails at your fingertips. Worth a visit in the near future. This time of year is awesome!

It's one part I haven't been to yet. I hear it's gorgeous. I disagree with Steve-O. I think cornfields are beautiful. I love Illinois, I haven't found a bad spot yet.

Cornfields arent necessarily ugly, but hundreds of miles of them in a row is boring and becomes repetetive.

I suppose it depends on your experience. I am originally from California where you are never very far from a mountain range or a large body of water. The view is pretty, but very limited and can be claustrophobic after a while (like a lifetime). I love the expansiveness of the plains and fields.

My husband and I LOVE Shawnee NF! We try to camp in the area at least once a year. We camped for 11 days during our last trip, and enjoyed every moment of it!
