Well from Rockford to Hoffman Estates is about an Hour and half on a good day. Tolls are $0.80 with a government tracking device (IPASS) or $1.60 with out. I believe there is 3 tolls . So as long as you don't mind driving 3 hours a day, and paying up the wazzo for gas and tolls.

Nonsense. You can easily make it to Hoffman from the east side of Rockford (the part you're more likely to want to live in) in less than an hour. There usually aren't any "bad" days on that portion of the tollway; backups usually don't start any further west than Rosemont, except maybe for spring/summer/fall holiday weekends when people are streaming to and from Wisconsin.

>>backups usually don't start any further west than Rosemont,
way less than an hour.... there is congestion pockets on the west side of Rte 53 ... But i'm trying to think if there are any west of HE.
Depending on the time of day you are traveling, my guess would be 30-45 min from the east side [I39 or so] to roughly Rte59.

I myself drive from Rockford, near State and Alpine, to Downers Grove. It takes me about 1hr and 15 minutes the most an hour and a half on bad days. For me, I have IPass and tolls run me about $4.00 each day round trip not to mention filling up my tank every other day. The drive is not all that bad, you get used to it. It's just about the same as commuting from the Suburbs to they city, but without the traffic. Housing is cheaper, so I guess it makes up for it. But, I am getting bored with Rockford and might be looking into moving back into the chicagoland. It's all a personal preference moving to Rockford. I myself love the city life and want to move back towards Chicago. I'm in the mortage industry, so there is more of a greater opportunity for me in Chicago.

A tad of an exagerration...Lake Michigan from Clock Tower is about 90 miles. You're in Chicago after ~62 miles. I consider myself in the metro once I'm in Elgin (45 miles from Clock Tower)...the "city" once in Schaumburg (57 miles from Clock Tower)
Hoffman is between the two...

That is true. I mean, from State and Alpine, it is exactly 80 miles from Rockford to Downers Grove at Butterfield Road. It takes me about an hour and fifteen minutes for the commute. It sucks, but that is what I have to do to make a living.
