Renter's insurance?
I was talking about moving to Illinois (Rockford/Rockton/Dekalb area) with my girlfriend and she mentioned something about the state requiring renters insurance or something. Any info regarding that?

You should always have renter's insurance.

I'm sure it can certainly help a body, but I'm asking if it's required on the state of Illinois.

Renter's insurance is really cheap, and is something you should really consider. My policy is something like $50 for 6 months through American Family, which also gives me a slight discount on car insurance. I haven't had to make any claims, but if I were to be broken into, it'd be the only way to recover my costs.

Forgot to add that Illinois IS a mandatory car insurance state though, and this is new to a lot of folks.

The big thing to remember about renter's insurance is NOT that it protects your beat up old couch or crumbling TV, but that it gives you LIABILITY insurance should a fire in your apartment end up burning down the neighbor's house.
It really is a good idea.
p.s. Many leases REQUIRE that you get renters insurance for just this reason.

Also, it covered us when my boyfriend lost his cellphone....
It will also cover laptops, etc, if they are stolen from places other than your home.
