Dealing with the police in Rockford is for the most part a nightmare if you need help with something. They are down right intimidating to you as if they want you to simply go away and leave them alone as if you, the complainer are the problem. I've had far too many experiences with this kind of behavior for me to have any faith in their abilities to stem crime in the area.
I had hoped Mayor Morrisey would take action on this as I'm sure I'm not the only who has noticed the problem. I was worried when he promoted someone from within the org. and downright disappointed and cynical that any changes would be made. I was WRONG! Chief Epperson is in big trouble with the union and that should not be surprising. I'm sure whoever did the hiring in the past took a number of unqualified individuals onboard and they were able to get lazy and undisciplined about how they conducted themselves. It should follow whoever walks into the command position had better keep the status quo or suffer for it. I'd love to hear from those officers who are not going along with the union or who feel forced to due to politics. Having belonged to a union at one time, I know how that is. As long as the Mayor and the Chief hang tough, the situation will be resolved. This may involve the resignation of a number of officers who have become accustomed to doing business the OLD way. The union's willingness to take their grievances to the public and air the dirty laundry of the department in public speaks to their lack of professionalism. NO SYMPATHY from me. I'm just sorry I can't write a letter to the editor stating as such but feel I can't in case I need their services! When we can get officers who are a bit more educated and have a bit more sophistication that's needed in an urban environment, I think the city will be able to utilize their "neighborhood" officers who deal with ongoing issues and individual citizens will also feel more inclined to be helpful. We seem to lose more neighborhoods to crime and I believe one reason is that the police give up on them. The culture in the department lends itself to doing so. I am optimistic however. Chief Epperson doesn't seem to wish to win a popularity contest which shows his strength of character. I'm sincerely hoping he can effect the changes needed to bring up the level of our standard of living. |

Did it ever occur to you that since you were speeding you were breaking the law? Therefore the ticket? Next time don't speed. Rockford Police are very good.

I agree with Havasu.
There are worse crimes than robbery, like murder. So why are we going after them? There are worse crimes than murder, like double murders. So why are we going after single murderers? |
