Effingham Is The Start Of The Bibile Belt
Dear Friend:
Effingham, IL is the northern edge of the 'Bible Belt'. See The Cross Foundation for the proof of this.
Generically speaking, it is a large town with people that are more gracious than 'Northerner's. In some parts of the "Bible Belt" one will see closed shops on Sunday so that the owners can attend Sunday morning church services. And also, such people will go out of their way to be friendly towards 'you' - - to welcom your presence - - and to their very best to help you in whatever you need.
A 'northerner' will probably notice such a change in the people down there in Southern Illinois. However, there are other good towns also in that nearby area of Interstate # 57. Another nice large town to consider is Mount Vernon, Illinois. Mt. Vernon is the trucking metropolis since Interstate 57 and Interstate 64 cross in Mt. Vernon. So if one has a 'CDL' over the road truck driver's license - - then Mt. Vernon would provide excellent employment in that field.

Hello Patsy
One other item of importance... If you have an 'RN' license from a different state other than Illinois, you may have to be recertified again in the state of Illinois. Illinois is a 'stickler' regarding that. That's for the medical profession and also educational license as an Illinois teacher.
As a student at Central Missouri State University, he was close to his teaching license - - for Missouri. However, when he returned to Illinois, he had to start over with many classes through graduating classes at Northern Illinois University.
When he completes his degree, he will have something like 8 or 9 years of college education.... Is that 'bummer' or not?
Where is the limit in all of this educational folly? Many obtain a four year college degree and then corporations start / secretly hiring only those with a master's degree - - to place those highly educated people into production level / factory assignments.
I don't know how to determine the employment remuneration in your chosen area. And so perhaps some one else could help you on that?

Effingham is really where the whole notion of 'Southern Illinois" starts to happen. There is still some debate on where the actual line of Southern Illinois is, but Effingham is without a doubt more southern feeling than midwest Illinois. It is small, and really not a ton to do. But if you want cheap home prices, and a less rushed life, than Effingham might be the best solution. Are their substantial reasons that you are looking to southern Illinois rather than central? In the past decade central Illinois has grown by leaps and bounds it seems, with global buisness and massive renovations of just about every major city. But what has not changed is our similar quality of life to that of Chicago, but with the slower, less expensive southern Illinois lifestyle. Effingham might be what you are looking for, but don't pass it by untill you come and see what Peoria, or Bloomington look like now.
