Quincy, IL
Hi Folks.
Was wondering if anyone is from Quincy and what it is like there? Where is the best place to live? Il or in MO? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Kaz

IL is better
Hi, my husband is from Quincy and we are moving back there at the end of summer. I think it is a pretty cool place to live. It isn't a metropolis by any means but it does have just about anything you could need. They have most of the big box stores there like Lowes, Kmart, Kohls, Shopko, and of course a Wal-Mart since it is the midwest. There is a really pretty downtown and from what my husband tells me there are lots of festivals and entertaining things all year. Quincy also has a few colleges and a university if you are at all interested in going to school there. Quincy is also close to a few tourist attractions like Hannibal, MO (home of Mark Twain) and Nauvoo, IL. I have been there three times and I like it enough to agree to move there. As far as the question about whether it is better to live in IL or MO, anyone from IL would tell you that MO sucks. I don't know if that is true but Quincy is right on the MO boarder so you could have the best of both worlds so to speak. One of the only downsides to living in Quincy that I can forsee is that the nearest "big city" is St. Louis, MO which is 2 hours away or Springfield, IL which is 1 hr. 45 min. away. Also, even though Chicago may look pretty close when you are looking at a map it is actually about an 8 hour car ride since there are not any direct roads.
Hope this answer enlightened you in some way.

First, I'm from Quincy and now living in Chicago. Just a correction, there is a direct road to Chicago (take 72 to 55 all the way!), so it is about 5.5 hours (and a train that takes 4.5). Quincy is a fine place to live if you want a small town feel. It has a ton of bars, but isn't a very diverse place. There are festivals, etc, but things can get a bit repetative. Oh, and I'm referring to Quincy, IL NOT MO! You don't want to live there. If you have other questions, feel free to send me a private message.

As for the difference between IL and MO? Expect to pay out the nose in taxes in IL compared to MO.
Compare property taxes between the MO side and IL side. You will see a big difference.

Quincy is a growing little city. It has gotten most of the modern chains over the last decade or so, and it's mall is still alive. Generally not a lot of crime. Didnt' used to have a very good public education system, but it may have changed. If you don't like living in a real city, but like to visit one, Quincy might suit you as it is not too far of a drive to St louis.
As far as IL vs MO, there isn't much of it on the MO side, and what little there is mainly consists of gas stations. Otherwise, you are basically looking at farm land on the MO side.
Downtown Quincy is not dumpy, but it certainly hasn't been updated in a few decades either. Bars consist of the typical small city type places- cover bands or flavor of the day pop-hop. Definitely nothing trendy going on there.
The coolest thing Quincy ever had was a suspended cable car ride near the Mississippi river, but I don't think it still exists.

Actually, Quincy has a very good public education system. Downtown Quincy is historic, but most of it still needs renovating, so besides a few shops and clubs there isn't a lot going on down there.
And no, the suspended cable care hasn't existed in years.
If you are looking for a small town, Quincy is nice. If you are bored easily and want a town with a lot going on, it's not for you.

What are you looking for? Quincy does have places to hang out. The previous post was referring to the Downtown area, which in Quincy, is the "historic district" (i.e., a few things and its been renovated).
There are a lot of bars, a few popular ones are the Abby, Spring Street, and Barneys. There is also a new wine bar called Bricks, I believe (I haven't been there yet, will be there over Christmas).
Really, Quincy is only a town of 40,000. There is stuff to do, but it's a small town with the bigger towns being a 2 hour drive.
Here is an article about Quincy Daily Herald | Quincy, Ill., offers lots of holiday lights -- and delights
