Anyone residing in Decatur, IL would know the area surrounding Archer - Daniels - Midland. In that particular area, are there residential subdivisions without any criminal element - - i.e., a safe neighborhood? Or is that area perhaps saturated with inddustry?
Does anyone have comments on this subject? Thank you ! ![]() Carter Glass |

Carter,
Decatur has lots of neighborhoods without crime problems. I live just east of the corporate headquarters in a blue collar area and crime is not a problem here. The major crime problems are inner city, areas near the plant (NE side of town) are OK. The plant is also near the lake, so when you get close to the shore it is an upscale neighborhood. Gary |

Dear Friend:
Welcome to the City - Data Forums... and I believe you will quickly observe the friendliness of all of the people on board, here. Incidentally, there are a number of different forums including my favorites of "Chicago Suburbs", "Mortgages", "Illinois" and "Education". When I travel to Mount Vernon in Southern Illinois, I usually don't go through Decatur. But I am curious of that town as a possible retirement community. On my next Southern Illinois trip, I will make an attempt to drive through your area. So thank you for taking the time with your very nice comments. ![]() Best Regards, Carter Glass, Wheaton, IL |

Perhaps I am blind. I grew up, lived in and around, Decatur from 1968 until 1985 and cannot think of another place I would not want to return to to live. I suppose if you wanted to move to Mt. Zion or Forsyth you might be safe. The city itself is facing real issues. Sure there are a few neighborhoods that are relatively safe, but the city in general is blighted. Industry has been leaving, taking with it middle class jobs, for decades. There is really nothing left but ADM and the hospital.
I started with I grew up in Decatur. I left in 1985 but I visit from time to time as my mother still lives there. I visited her just last week..., my words to her was what I had done 20+ years ago: get out as soon as you can and stay out! Sorry Decatur, but you need help. |
