I will be moving the the far west burbs in a few months and I am having a hard time finding information. I will call the local departments to be safe but I just wanted to see what I can expect. I currently have my CC permit as well as a shotgun and an AR-15. I have been told the AR is a no go but that doesn't seems to be quite true unless you are in cook county. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I just talked to our Sheriff. Cook County law may be different. If you have a FOID card, and if you have a CC card, and if you went to the mandatory CC school prior to obtaining the CC, then you are in full compliance and you can carry on your hip or within reach in your vehicle. If you do not then you must break down the weapon and stow it and the ammon NOT within reach of driver or passengers.

Single shot and semi-auto are legal. A fully automatic weapon in Illinois is not legal. There m be a limit on the size of he magazine too. I did not ask.

Cook County and/or Chicago may have additional restrictions or requirements that do not apply outside of Cook County and/or Chicago.

Suffice to say, IL will be worse for honoring your rights than almost any state in the union sans MD and/or CA.

I feel sorry for you.

I hated living there for numerous reasons including how the corrupt, putrid, gov't of IL hates law abiding gun owners.

I will never forget the humiliation of having to show a damn FOID card just to buy a brick of .22LR's It is an outrageous place

I must say though that a relative of mine did get the town of Carroll Stream to remove onerous regulations that went above state requirements when I pointed out his town had silliness in place. it was surprisingly easy to get the town to see the futility of what was on the books.

Humiliation really to show the FOID for some .22's, that's being a tad extreme.

OP I'm assuming you're coming from out of state, but maybe I read it wrong. If you're CCL is for IL. then you're good. No other States CCL/CCW's are recognized. In IL AR's are perfectly fine. There are no mag capacity restrictions. But be aware some suburbs can enact local ordinances that are stricter than State law. So make sure you find that out first. I'd say 98% of the burbs outside of Cook County have no additional restrictions.

There's also no requirement when transporting a gun to have it "broken down". The unloaded gun must be in a case, and it's fine for ammo to be in the same case. The unloaded gun can also be anywhere in the vehicle as long as it's in a case, not accessible is not accurate. As long as it's unloaded and cased, it can be anywhere. Just read the ISP website and it'll give you all the info you need.

So in brief, once you move apply for your FOID immediately. Once FOID arrives you can then take the CCW course so that you can carry.
