While some of the crime rates for Rockford are above the national average, that crime is generally concentrated on the in the poor neighborhoods on the west side of the river, especially the southwest, areas that are ghettos or one or 2 steps above ghetto. Area wise, most of the city is quite safe. There are nice subdivisions around the city in unincorporated parts of Winnebago County. Beyond that, there are the NO REAL ESTATE TAX cities of Cherry Valley, Loves Park and Machesney Park. Cherry Valley has the highest per capta city budget because of the sales tax goldmine of the Cherry Vale Mall and the Bachrodt car dealership, whereas the other 2 municipalities struggle to provide city services.

If you are willing to pay more for your house and spend more for gasoline, consider Rockton, Roscoe, Belvidere, Davis Junction, Stillman Valley, Byron and the village of Winnebago.

A multiple listing realtor should be of great help in picking a home and neighborhood.

It's not a place I would let my kids be educated in. If you have no kids go ahead and live there, but have a gun and a few trained dogs. And know how to use it.

Quit playing the east side west side card--this whole town should be flushed down the toilet.
You simply don't hear about the crimes on the east side so much.
Come on, East state at Fairview is full of homeless and prostitutes and hustlers--I won't even get out of my car there to shop-and I see beggars in the parking lot at Gordman's, about as far east as it gets!
You see, ghetto folk now can take the bus--they have learned---to get money you gotta go where da money is!

There are some heavy hitting parts on rockford. Thats winnebago county.

Machesney Park is a Village and therefore is only policed by the county.
Loves Park has its own police department servicing the town of 20,000.
