Maybe i'll change my mind when the time comes, but the idea of living in a place like Sun City makes my skin crawl. I'd live in a 1000 sq foot conto downtown any day and lose the car, before I'd live out in the middle of nowhere. I think many people just love owning homes, even in retirement. The idea of living in a place with common walls, freaks many people out. But having lived in condos for many years, I'm comfortable with it. I hope I can afford to live in the city in my Golden Years.

Naperville is one of the nation's top 80 communities to retire.

You are centrally located between North Central College, Benedictine University, and College of Dupage. DePaul & DeVry offer satellite schools. The school district offers a program called "Hurrah" Happy Upbeat Retirees (& other) Residents Actively Helping - It offers the generation gap some closure by having them help each other. The park district has a "New Horizons" program that offers numerous activities and trips for those over 50. The Riverwalk offers enjoyable and scenic walking paths. There are plenty of dining choices to choose from.

So you see - Naperville is not just for families, many retirees make Naperville their home.

(Excuse me for having to say "white," but we all know how segregated Chicago remains until today...darn it!)
If you want the Chicago area...the Southwest suburbs have The Commons of Palos Park, townhomes, really beautiful setting and wonderful neighbors...a short 2 minute walk to Metra commuter trains for an evening downtown, Palos Hospital across the street, and 10 minutes away is Orland Park shopping. Also many good churches in the area. The townhomes are in the $400K range.

I can't imagine wanting to RETIRE to Illinois. GREAT place as far as work but that's about it. Cost of homes, taxes, etc. are crazy and the winter weather doesn't help either. I'm retiring OUT of Illinois.
Good luck to you, whatever you choose!

If old is what you are looking for then these are the areas for you. Bring your huge _ _ _ Cadillac that you can barely see over the steering wheel in, with the giant rear tail lights that measure about 12 inches long (up and down), turn on that left turn signal and leave it on, and be sure to drive down 95th Street at 15 MPH... In the left hand lane mind you, and you will fit right in with the rest!

my mother just moved to some senior condos in Geneva. They are located right by Delnor Hospital and Geneva Commons. they have one, two and three bedroom units for sale. all underground parking, nice community room, nice office staff. reasonably priced the for popular tri-cities area. it is called the Crossings. must be all owner-occupied.

Sun City, in Huntley, seems to be the least expensive of the Del Webb communities that are popping up in northern Illinois. And it's a full blown Sun City with its own golf course. My wife and I are thinking about moving there from the northwest side of Chicago to get out of "Crook County"! We have visited it a couple times and are really impressed; the only thing that makes me hesitant is that it is very large. I think the population is 5000+ in Sun City, though that may keep the association fees down a bit. I think the closest Metra station is in Crystal Lake about 10 miles from Huntley.

I do a lot of work in the Huntley area. Seniors love the Del Webb community. If I was retiring the last place I would retire is Naperville. Don't get me wrong it's a fine city with plenty to do, but it's also very, very congested.

Actually there is a large retirement community and all sorts of senior activities in Evanston. That's a little pricey, though. Rogers Park has a plethora of nursing homes, if you want that.
