John Deer, Holt Manufacturing Company that became Caterpillar, the skyscrapers in Chicago, sending three Illinois residents to the White House, the log turning tool still used in lumber mills today.

The US Research Laboratory in Peoria, Illinois first mass produced Penicillin for WWII for the US and its allies in Europe. In WW I Holt Manufacturing Company in East Peoria, Illinois reversed course, and stopped manufacturing farm equipment to join the war effort. "Holt's equipment was credited with helping the Allies to win the war and its tractor was regarded as "one of the most important military vehicles of all time."" We cannot forget ADM another global Illinois company that employes 37000 for research and production.

Historically speaking the courthouse in Woodford County is where Lincoln tried his only murder case, and if it wasn't for Lincon, the circuit rider, the state capital might still be in Vandalla. In WWI, a little known internment camp for enemy aliens was established in Fulton County. The only remnant today is the small steel bridge that crosses the Spoon River. And the descendants of the original Peoria Band live in NE Oklahoma today.

Fermi is America's premier particle physics lab with the largest collaboration in the world with more than 500 members: Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment. With Dark Engergy and LBNE, Fermi has come a long way and it's not even 50 yer!

Electrical stuff has been marked UL for a long time. I didn't know it was from Chicago.

Another Chicago landmark is the Picasso in Daley Plaza. I recently read somewhere that Chicago's Navy Pier is the #1 tourist destination in America. Koop's Stone Ground Mustard and Fanny May Candies are pure Chicago, too.

Illinois may be known for the Native American 'mounds' build by the mound dwellers, but probably best known by historians and archeologists. Illinois has a lot of history that is interesting.

It might be known for the President Reagan museum in Woodford County as it has items not found elsewhere plus there is a piece of the Berlin Wall.

Route 66 often gets overlooked as a classic American Icon originating in Illinois! Del Rhea's Chicken Basket in Willowbrook - a route 66 icon.

John Deere (someone mentioned) headquarters and Kone Elevator Co. in Moline. Can't forget places like Walgreens and Sears founded in Chicago. I really think Metra/and CTA are Iconic. Wrigley Field/Baseball. Abe Lincoln. Roseanne. The famous Illinois-Michigan Canal. The Chicago Fire. The confluence of the Illinois and the Ohio River, the Mississippi River. Al Capone. Hot Dogs, italian beef, and deep dish pizza.

I don't think it get's much more American than Illinois. It's Midwestern with both Northern and very southern culture wrapped into one. I never understood the upstate-downstate divide between some people, I like the entire state - but I'm sure that has more to do with politics than everyday people.
