Second hand smoke is totally avoidable. Simply stay out of places where people are smoking.

Auto emmissions are practically unavoidable. They're in our outdoor atmosphere everywhere.

Auto exhaust actually does pollute "public" places. Cigarrette smoke pollutes "private" places. Easily avoided.

You would have a much more legitamate argument in regulating auto exhaust, than cigarette smoke in private establishments.

I looked at some of them. It is well known that air pollution is another source of respiratory illness. But the major cause of lung cancer is cigarette smoking.

Regardless, it does not change the issue of this thread:

There does not need to be a "ban" on smoking in resturants. There does need to be a clear notice to potential patrons, as to the resturants smoking policies. Let the patron make the choice -

Then in order to avoid inhaling secondhand cigarette smoke, non-smokers virtually cannot go inside of most private places (i.e. bars, clubs, and restaurants). Why can't smokers just go outside? It seems like a happy medium to me. Not so strict as to ban smoking in the outside open air, but strict enough not to let it inside enclosed places. Smokers essentially say "we want to smoke indoors and blow it in everyone's face and we're not going to compromise!", while non-smokers say "you can still smoke--that's your choice--but don't blow it in my face...just go outside. We can hold our breath when we walk by you." It's a never-ending battle...but I'd be very surprised [and disappointed] if the whole ban is lifted.

Because there are these things called right in this country and if a bar owner wants people to smoke in his/her bar then it should be allowed.

Can you explain to me why if there are so many non-smokers who want to go out and go to bars but can't find any where there is no smoking there are very few non-smoking bars.

I'll tell you why- because most people don't care. If it were economically viable for businesses to jump on the non-smoking wagon they would have.

Perhaps the militant non-smokers are a much smaller minority than you seem to want to admit.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, it looks like about 20-25% of Illinois's citizens smoke, leaving 75-80% who don't. Majority rules!

From what I can tell, most non-smokers are either adamantly in favor of the smoking ban, or don't really care either way. I'd venture to say very few non-smokers are absolutely against the smoking ban.

No - for, I am a non smoker. Yet, I stand with the RIGHTS of the private property owner to decide what to do with their property / business.
