Count me as another non-smoker who opposes the smoking ban as enacted. And the fact that it has brought out the worst in the Smoke Nazis, even to the point of people basically saying "gee, I wish I had opportunities to be offended by someone else's smoke so I could snitch on people" only reinforces my misgivings. There were already 500 non-smoking restaurants in Chicago alone, but the Smoke Nazis were too lazy to seek them out.

I think tobacco education is extremely important, and it's clear that smoking is far less prevalent than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago, hopefully someday no one will smoke. But as long as it is a legal activity *which is key to me - business owners have a right to allow it. Do you think salon owners shouldn't be allowed to have tanning beds? That's not quite parallel here. Tanning beds are crucial to a salon owner's business. Without them, their businesses would almost certainly close. That would be like a bar not being allowed to sell alcohol. The case here is to just ask smokers to move outside when they smoke. Not that big of a deal in my opinion. Why can't they just respect that some people don't like it blown in their face? It's somewhat like asking someone who's shouting on their cell phone in a quiet restaurant to step outside. It's rude and inconsiderate of those around them. It's not a violation of rights issue--it's just common courtesy.

If a bar owner doesn't want smoking he should be able to set the rules in his own bar.
I don't smoke, but if I did I'd think I'd have the right in a bar. It's not like anybody goes into a bar to get healthy anyway. You can get blasted drunk but you have to freeze outside to smoke. It might hurt businesses in the East St. Louis/Collinsville area. All smokers have to do is cross the river. As far as I know, Most bars/restaurants in St. Louis (and most of Missouri probably) allow smoking, which is just fine with me. If a bar/restaurant owner doesn't want smoking, he/she can ban it from the business or have a designated area. A Perkins around here has an entirely different room for smoking. I don't care for Steak'n'shakes smoking area, though. All they have is a short little wall. I don't like to smell the smoke, but as long as it's in it's own room away from me, let them smoke. ^^ But, there are some places in the metro east that you can't quite get the same feeling from in St Louis

Automobiles are unavoidable...unless you live in Manhattan, you HAVE to have one, or take a bus which is no better.
You can't live without breathing in the fumes from a necessary evil; the vehicle. If anything, I think business will most likely pick up in most restaurants/bars in Illinois becauseo f the ban. I am one of those who would not set foot in a bar because of the disgusting smoke that gives me headaches after 20 minutes, but now can enjoy equally with the smokers. |

Yeah, I walk or drive by bars at night (even at 7pm on a Friday night) and see like 2 people in them. Before the ban there was dozens. You think business will increase in Chicago? Very doubtful. This is the end of a few hundred more bars and places that serve in Chicago. When Daley took office there were about 7000. Coming into this year there were around 1200.(By his doing alone.) There was a time in Chicago when there were 30,000 liquor licenses in Chicago. I am not making this up. Last edited by Avengerfire; 01-23-2008 at 12:49 AM.. |
