You do realize that in all but one ancient picture you posted everyone is smoking OUTSIDE don't you? You don't see them sitting 5 feet away from someone trying to enjoy their $25 steak dinner in a restaurant only to have it taste like a cigar or cigarette do you? Yes this used to happen to me CONSTANTLY around here until now. Now I can enjoy a nice evening out without my asthma being bothered by the rudeness of smokers who have ZERO manners to refrain from blowing their disgusting smoke right over in my direction. Just what I want... To sit down and have a dinner only to end up leaving smelling like A_ _ and have to go home take my inhaler and a shower to get the smell off me, oh and wash my clothes. Why should I be punished for someone else going out and smoking in a public establishment? If you want to kill yourself that is your problem, don't try to do it to me. |

If second hand smoke is "killing" you, why would you commit suicide by patronizing an establishment that allows smoking? |

Just as I'd never deliberately go to any establishment that freely allows people to puke on the floor, you had the choice to not go to an establishment that freely allows people to smoke. As for the idea that people were blowing smoke directly in your face, you mean to tell me you couldn't find one single establishment that had segregated smoking and non-smoking sections? Never was a problem for me or for most other non-smokers who got along just fine in the non-smoking sections.
Some of these arguments are just silly. |

3/4 of Illinois does not smoke, therefore I think restaurants should accommodate the majority of people. Why should this many people have to put up with smoke for a small crowd of smokers? Make them go outside! It's their choice to smoke and if they don't want to go outside to smoke--quit!

Why should business owners accommodate anyone but themselves??
I want to go o a restaurant, have my feet massaged and get free drinks. Hell I bet 90% of the folks in Illinois want that. Let's get that law passed guys!! |

Call me crazy, but business owners generally try to accommodate their customers. 3/4 of their customers don't smoke...

Sure they generally try to, but why should they be forced to?

I have a hard time believing that before this smoking ban there were "no" bars/restaurants that were smoke free. If 75% of people don't smoke, a majority of them must not be bothered enough by it to avoid going into those businesses, or else those businesses would surely have a hard time staying in businesses.
I can sympathize with being a non-smoker and not being able to find a non-smoking bar or restaurant to patronize, but let me make this comparison: I live in a rural area and enjoy Italian food. There's no good Italian restaurants within miles of where I live. That sucks. I wish there were. Does that give me the right to force the local cheeseburger joint to start serving Italian? Business owners go into business to make a profit. If there's more profit in catering to smokers, that's what they have to do to run a successful business. It may be a bummer to us non-smokers, but that's the way it works. Many small towns and rural areas don't have enough population for there to be "something for everyone". They have to cater to the majority of their "customers" to stay in business. Now on the other hand anyone should be free to invest their time and money into a non-smoking establishment to compete with the smoking establishments, and if there is enough demand for such a place, they should do well. I'm a non-smoker myself and I know what it's like to have only one bar in town that's full of smoke, but the point is "It's not my bar" I have to put up with it, or drive the extra miles to go someplace else. If having many entertainment choices is important to you, maybe you would be happier in a big city, but forcing every single business in the state to cater to your preferences to me is just downright unreasonable and unfair. |
