Before you jump your ill-informed self down my throat again, you live in Orland Park back when this whole thing was just getting started. The only restaurants that were non-smoking were the bad ones. The good ones like Harrisons, Southfork, Koppermill, among many others, not to mention Fat Sams, and Sam Maguires all allowed smoking and everytime I went in any of them the smoke would be so thick that you could cut it with a knife. It was disgusting.
Again, you think it is your God given right to sit your ignorant _ _ _ in a booth and poision all those that do what they can to remain healthy? And you rant that the government is overstepping it's bounds by telling people who ARE harming others that they should not be told not to do something where it has been proven to harm other people? Well then in that case you should be allowed to drink and drive right? I mean who is the government to tell you it is illegal to go out and get sloshed and then drive home? I mean it is after all the other person's fault that we are on the roads taking the chance that we could get hit by a drunk driver correct? In your mind set, where we should go somewhere else to not be subjected to smoke is much like we should not be on the PUBLIC roads either because we are in your way. Not to mention that just because you are drunk does not mean you are going to get into an accident either. There was however a time where it was no big deal to drive drunk, but after the government saw that it was endangering other people's lives it stepped in and said enough is enough. A good example of this was in the early '90s when IL went down from .10 to .08 making that now legally drunk. So who is the government to tell you you can't go out to a bar and get _ _ _ _ faced and then drive home? Who cares you are only endangering innocent lives. HMMM much like you are doing when you go out to a public place such as a bar or restaurant and light up. Ask yourself this, if your son or daughter had severe asthma would you light up right across the table from them and blow your smoke in their face? Didn't think so... At least I would hope not. Then why is it ok for you to light up right across an aisle while a NON smoking family is sitting right next to you trying to enjoy their meal and they possibly have someone sitting right there that is allergic to the smoke. Just stay home in that case right? I mean after all, a restaurant is no place to go out and EAT, it was meant for smoking. God forbid if it inconviences you for the better good of others. As soon as that owner gets that little slip from the State of Illinois saying business license, he/she forks over all his rights to do whatever the heck he/she wants. There are rules for us to follow just as there are on the roads, in schools, malls, you name it. You cannot just say, "oh I'm in business now and I'm going to do whatever I want." If that was the case, then owners wouldn't have to provide bathrooms, some could say, "no breaks for you even in an 8 hour shift", no reason to clean the plates and cups, just reuse them to save on water, this is why there are rules and this smoking thing now is a new one. Get used to it, because the other states will follow suit in this soon enough. Once CA, and then NY did it, I knew it was a matter of time for IL to follow suit. IL always does. Next will be WI to do it and then MN.

People, SMOKERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SMOKE IN BARS AND RESTAURANTS AT THE OWNER'S DISCRETION!! THE STATE SHOULD NOT JUMP IN! ITS NOT THEIR PLACE!
However, when the smokers eat at a restaurant for 3 years and find out they have been getting vegetables from the dumpster of their grocery store neighbor, "SHUT THEM DOWN! THIS IS A SERIOUS HEALTH VIOLATION! WE ARE OUTRAGED!" If you were eating a restaurant and took your physically handicapped grandmother to eat with you and they don't have a ramp but only 10 stairs climbing in to the restaurant, "CALL THE STATE! THEY ARE IN VIOLATION! THEY HAVE TO HAVE HANDICAPPED PARKING AND A RAMP LEADING TO THE DOOR!" But now that they have taken away a dangerous toxin that you smokers love to blow around to show how hip and cool you are, "THE STATE HAS NO RIGHT TO DO THIS!" So, my assumption is this; the state should be able to step in on *some* things, just not this one. RIght? I mean, you are all saying that it is the property owners right, correct? "No, jojojohnson76, those are health violations and the state should take control of that situation, it's clearly out of hand....just don't let them take away something that I like to do, or at least doesn't inconvenience me...THATS JUST WRONG!" There should be some interesting arguments on this point, and most can probably be summarized with the above statement. |

I think I'm going to open my own restaurant but refuse to hire minorities. I mean, it's my business, so that should be okay with all of you...right?
