If it has to be Rockford proper, I would look on the far east side. Near Rock Vally College or the like. Guilford HS seems to be OK. Don't hear of many problems there. But be prepared for the property taxes. I have a $120,000 home and pay $4000 a year in property taxes.
Myself, I would avoid Boone county. They have a lot of school problems and problems with gang bangers. Well, in Belvidere anyway.

"Gang bangers"? Who are you and what do you know about Belvidere if you don't live there? I was born and raised in Belvidere. In schools rich kids, farm kids, and hispanics. yeah. HUGE gangbanger problem. gimme a break.... I now live in Rockford, they are both totally fine. Rockford property taxes are high, but what can ya do.

I'm with you Lp....... I laugh at some of the comments I see on these forums. I currently live in Boone County and I love it! My kids are in the Belvidere School District and I have no problems at all.

Your best source is to go to the Illinois interactive report card to find information on local schools.

My son goes to Belvidere High School and there are no gang problems. He graduates this year (with perfect attendence I might add) and he loves the school. I've asked him about drugs and gangs, etc. He said the school is really on top of things.
The athletics program was in money trouble this year but things worked out and the sports went off without a hitch. The booster club is amazing. My son was on the football team and when we went to away games, it wasn't unusal to see more people in the vistor's stands than the home team had.
I lived in Belvidere for 8 years and it is a great town. As far as Rockford is concerned, the east side is great too. The taxes are a deal buster for me. I live in Sycamore now and the taxes aren't any better than Rockford. Myself, I'm Texas bound. After 46 years I've had all I can take of Illinois. Just one more nasty winter to go and I'm outta here!

Remember in Rockford the taxes will be higher in Boone, but Boone county's prices are a lot higher. This will offset the tax difference. Also you can write off property taxes as well.

gang activity in Belvidere
I live in Belvidere and I wouldn't say there is a huge gang problem, but it definitely exists here. I live in a nice subdivision and we have had tagging and graffiti problems. Hopefully it won't get worse or we may have to re-think living here.
Two of my children go to Meehan Elementary and we have been very happy with the school.

I have grown up in Rockford and currently live in Loves Park near I90 which has become a very desirable area. Rockford has some great places to live such as Spring Lake estates and Loves Park as well in Kings Acres, Breckenridge and Park Place, very kid friendly. Roscoe does have good schools, but Guilford is a very good Rkfd public high school. Spectrum School is a great private school and so is Rockford Christian.

Can't say Rockford is any better, however. (We live there, but have kids in grammar school). Harlem schools are rated better than Rockford, but they've had several teachers strikes.
And, just because you live in a certain town, doesn't necessarily mean you go to that town school... there's tons of Machesney Park, Loves Park, some Caledonia and some Roscoe residents going to Rockford schools.
I personally think it's what you make of it... and who your child hangs out with.
Rockford Christian seems to be a good choice for private, seems popular in this part of Rockford anyway. We're far East... State and Perryville area. Haven't come across much crime myself, but read it in the paper daily.
