Fox River Grove or Crystal lake, and if you want some conjestion Schaumburg is good. Fox River Grove is like small town mayberry with all the big towns next to them.

I like northwestern Illinois. I do not know where you are getting a job, though, more than likely it is in Chicago or the burbs.'
Cities I love in NW IL are:
Oregon-- It is in Ogle County. I find it a very quaint community. The courthouse and the river are beautiful, and the population is near 4,100. The schools are very good... Jefferson Elementary School is the only public elementary school and is a great option... Good teachers and program. The city itself is growing and believe it or not, the Chicago sprawl is beginning to effect the area... It is at the juncture of Hwy 2 and 64 in Central Ogle County, again.
Other great areas:
Galena--Jo Daviess County
Roscoe-- Winnebago County
Naperville-- I don't know, it's near Chicago
Ottawa-- I don't know, it is along I-80 just south of Chicago.
Mount Carroll/Savanna-- Carroll County, great places, good schools.
All of the areas above I have been and I am quite fond of. I am very familiar with several cities in the Northwest part of the state and eastern Iowa...
Hope I could help

Forget Northern Illinois, how about Central Illinois? Springfield or any of the surrounding towns have good schools, reasonable to very expensive housing. Where are you coming from, that might give readers a clue to help with your relocation plans.

I would DEFINITELY STAY OUT of either the east side of Springfield or anywhere in the City of Decatur altogether!! My daughter (a single Mom) lived in the Mount Zion School District (suburb of Decatur) but she rented and found she couldn't afford to live in MZ in a house she owned, so she opted to move to Clinton. Excellent Schools and equidistant to both Bloomington/Normal to the North and Decatur to the south (she works in Decatur and commute to the north end). Schools are excellent here and many of the "State Farmers" are discovering that it is far less costly to buy a house in Clinton than in B/N. Last year, I counted about 8 Dumpsters parked in front of houses in Clinton (including my daughter's, unfortunately!) that were going through a complete re-hab.
Gratefully, building codes and enforcement thereof are coming to Clinton but I only wish they were going to be retroactive (no "grandfathering!") so that people who have the older, trashy properties couldn't "sandbag" purchasers with them. Many of the things in the house our daughter bought couldn't be detected until it was too late because the problems were carefully hidden behind sheetrock where no inspector could see them anyway!
Faithfully,
G.A.

What part of Illinois are you looking to move to? Illinois is a big state. Also, I too am confused by the 20K-30K price range. That is an awful lot to spend a month on rent unless you want to be neighbors with Oprah Winfrey and are planning on a huge penthouse condo in the gold coast of Chicago overlooking the lake. 20K-30K is not enough if you are planning to buy a place.

Just make sure you do your homework and don't move into a flood zone. Good luck. It's becoming too overcrowded with new developments popping up everywhere. I'll be moving south in a couple of days. Oooh, also make sure you have adequate parking.
