I went through CAIRO about 7 years ago on my way to marble hill MO, it seemed a nice little town then, but the job prospects there are not very good. Yea a lot of abandoned buildings, with a 50's flair, it would be a good town for someone retired and who has the money to get by without a job, but if your looking for work, forget it.

Check out the $175K listing @ farmerco.net. I suspect it's overpriced.

Are there bookstores, cafes, or any places locals can hang out.
Any and all info will be much appreciated.

I just drove from NOLA to Chgo. & detoured thru this godforsaken surreal place. No speeding ticket --- drove slow to take it all in. No cute coffee shops but plenty of board-ups & burn-outs needing rehab. No cars or humans on the whole main street. The youtube video says it all.

Cairo is pretty sad. I was stuck there after a meeting in Metropolis, IL due to a snowstorm. I was trying to drive to Lexington, KY and could not make it. After a detour, I ended up in Cairo. I have to agree with many of the posts on this board. Having spent time in Casablanca with the USAF and having toured Darfur twice, I'd ahve to say there is very little to distinguish Cairo from Darfur, save, perhaps, though I am not sure, the genocide.
I am sure that homes and buildings can be purchased for a song. If you want to move there, bring lots of John McPhee books, Rachmaninoff piano concerti CDs, a satellite dish to get NFL network and as many Ron Jeremy DVDs as you can find on ebay as this will be the only form of entertainment and release that you will know until you emancipate yourself, by hook or crook, from the town's ennui.

apparently racism is acceptable in this area, as no one even attempted to call attention to this racial slur for African Americans

If we could just get some money Cairo would be a great place. There is so much history here. And its in a very good location. I would love nothing more than to see Cairo rise up and overcome all of its depression. However, that isnt going to happen if nobody comes. Nobody cares about the people stuck here. Its the parents fault not ours that we live here. Maybe if people moved here and opened up businesses and did something with it, more ppl would come. Cairo has its downfalls but as much as I hate it, I gotta love it. It's my home. And for all u ppl who got somethin smart to say and always criticizing cairo maybe if you bring ur ass down here and do somethin with it it wouldnt be so bad. If you dont live here and dont plan on helpin us out dont criticize our home.

No criticism from me I wish every town in the state the best since you've lived in Cairo your whole life what do you think needs to be done?

Ah yeah, forgot about them when I made that post. They are usually counted in the St. Louis metro like Northwest Indiana.
