Its hard to believe that with all this sunshine that we're gonna get one of the worst storms ever tonight. Tom Skilling is calling the ice storms predicted south of I-80 to be "Herculean". That scares me.
But as I type this, its bright sunshine and deep blue skies. How odd. I have to drive all the way out to Dixon this evening, which means Ill be running right into the monster thats heading this way. Should be fun.

I heard the same weather prediction for tonight, Steve-o, which is very dangerous for anyone that has to be outside.
It's sunny and 20 degrees right now in the northwest Chicago area but apparently the ominous storm is on the way. Be very careful driving in Dixon, I feel for you!

I'll take snow over ice any day. Last night when I looked at the forcast online it was 50% chance of precipitation-ice pellets. That never happened but it looks 100% chance of some snow tonight.
Steve-o, I know you are familar with Sycamore. Last winter an ice storm took out the utility poles that held up the nets at the driving range on 64 across from the golf course.
Next time you wander by notice they are all steel poles now.

Funny thing was that I was visiting a friend (off Sacramento St) in Sycamore the night that happened. We were outside having a cigarette and noticed a huge orange/green glow in the sky (blown transformer), then the power went out. On the way home I noticed all the downed poles from the driving range, that was nuts!
Back to tonights storm... they said it would begin around 6:30? Its now 8:30 and quiet as a mouse here in Warrenville. Anyone seeing any snow yet?

Steve, I have to say, it's very quiet here as well. Very, and I mean very moist. You can tell something is on the way! I just hope we get enough snow before 7 A.M. so I can have a snow day @ work.

It's about 11:20 p.m. here in River Grove and it's snowing. We'll see what happens overnight. We're supposed to get anywhere from 6 to 14 inches--yikes.

One of those mornings you best stay in bed. When the cars have a glaze of ice on them, I'm heading back inside until the sun comes up. Don't know the road conditions but if my sidewalk is any indicator, it's down-right dangerous out there.
Everyone take it slow and safe.
EDIT: Just thought I would add, 5:50am, to add to the wintery mix, lightning and thunder.

Billy your describing Thundersnow if I remember correctly. Steve-o the weather man for City data should be able to correct me if I'm wrong.
About 150 miles north of you guys near the Dells/Portage/Baraboo we've had about a foot of snow on the ground. Still coming down strong...

Josh, i agree steve-o is the resident weather guy here on C-D.
Watching the news this morning I did pickup a new term I've never heard, gauple. Indeed we are getting thundersnow with a side order of grauple, granular snow.
We have about 3 inches of new snowfall so far and as I type this it still is snowing, flakes now not the pellet/grauple type. Lightning/thunder has passed. I can see 64 from my window and there is almost no traffic for this time of morning. I didn't venture out on the roads yet but my car doors are frozen closed at the moment. Police scanner is buzzing with reports of cars in ditches. Tow companies will made a killing this morn, me thinks.
Slow and steady wins the race. Be safe folks!
