Winter in Southern Illinois
Question for Muleskinner
I have been reading this thread and noticed you are from the far southern Illinois area. I am retired living in NW Illinois and finding the winters to be extreme with respect to snow and cold. I'm looking for an area with milder winters.
It looks like the area south of Marion around the Shawnee National Forest would be quite a bit milder than up here during the winter. Temps seem to average a good 15-20 degrees higher. Just wondered if the snow you get is of the shoveling variety. Also does it last long. If not that would be OK for me.
If you did not get those ice storms, I'm thinking the winters are actually not so bad. It would be attractive for me being only about a 6 hour drive to get there. I would be thinking of spending most of the Nov. thru March time frame in the area. Rest of time up here in NW Illinois to avoid the hot humid summer weather in the far south Ill. area.
I would appreciate your opinion about winter in southern Illnois. Thanks so much for any comments you wish to give me. They are appreciated.
Jim

The winters are truly mild compared to NW IL....I've worked outside in Rochelle/Mendota area and Aurora/Naperville area during the winter time on outside buried telephone construction and you guys TRULY have a real winter up there compared to here and imo it was even bad compared to SW Wy where I spent a good portion of my life.I lived here, worked there and travelled home on the weekends and it was a MAJOR difference down here when I'd get home.
The ice storms have never been to much of a problem at all around here until the last two winters and most times it stays fairly decent around here up until near the middle of Dec(we rode up until Dec 2nd of this year)...you can expect some days in the teens Jan-early Mar,but usually not to many and during that time mid 40s can be expected quite a bit.....rains start kicking in (if we are lucky) during mar, april and may and then it usually stays mild until july when it starts getting pretty hot.Aug-Oct can be downright miserably hot sometimes, but i'll take that over freezing my butt off any day of the week
We generally only get a couple of snows that last more than a day or so, there have been exceptions (including this year...check out my posts in Illinois images)but they are not the general rule around here.Needless to say, most of us don't even own a snow shovel
I live right on the Shawnee NF borderline SE of Marion and imo it is VERY nice here...cheap living, good people, tons of medical facilities fairly close and an outdoorsmans paradise compared to some places....if you need any more info feel free to DM me anytime and I'll be glad to help you with anything I can
