I remember my nose freezing too! I waked to work that first winter (hospital, not visiting nurse at the time). Nah, it's not too bad. Some winters no bad snows at all.

ha ha oh man... I am NOT looking forward to more winter and cold. Boston just got hit with that storm... if only the college was somewhere warm... *sigh* but I guess I can handle more winter and cold. Thanks for the advice. I do have my heart set on a dog though! I'd get one now, but Boston is waaaaay too expensive as it is...

Cragslist is an easy way to find apartments that accept pets. They have a check-off box to narrow your search that way. As for 4WD, don't forget Illinois is flat as a pancake. Driving in snow, compared to Massachusetts, will be no problem.

magtrix, I've lived Urbana for 3yrs. from Chicago very different. Sometimes in a bad way. There's alot to do here, but don't wait for it to come to you. I have two dogs live in a house. Rent is $600 very low side. I got lucky!

I lived in Ashton Woods with two dogs. Its only about 1.5 miles from campus with buses going by every 10-15 minutes. About a 30 minute walk to the south part of campus, but much quicker if you have a bike or take the bus (free to students). Rent was about 600 with pets, but parking was free. Apartments are a little older, built in the '50s but most are good condition. Management is friendly and accessible.

a bit late but Country Fair Apts and fox ridge townhomes (I think the name may have changed for these) will allow certain pets but you have to pay a pet deposit fee. They are both in W. Champaign, a few miles from the UofI. CF is pretty cheap and good if you are on a tight budget (although I believe there was a shooting in their parking lot a few years ago). Fox Ridge is more upscale and hence more expensive. If you get a dog, please consider adopting from the Champaign County Human Society ( Champaign County Humane Society On-Line) in Urbana. Lots of dogs and cats up for adoption there.

Thanks so much for all your help. I will definitely keep these apartments in mind. You're not too late, I am just early in my search I like to plan ahead! And yes, I am definitely going to adopt a dog. I feel so bad for all the ones in shelters, I wish I could adopt them all and give them a good home!
