I'm originally from Wisconsin and I have to say, I think it's because Wisconsin is jealous of Illinois. (Especially southern Wisconsin) Sorry, I don't want to say that all Illinois has for itself is Chicago but that's what most non-locals first think of and lets face it, Chicago makes Milwaukee look like a joke. Chicago steals any chance of thunder Milwaukee might have. Do people that live in Illinois really think they're better than people that live in Wisconsin? Hell if I know (I highly doubt it) but it seems like Wisconsinites are pretty fond of thinking they do.
As far as Wisconsinites hating Illinoisans for coming in and, "invading their quiet little neighborhoods," etc... that seems silly to me. That happens anywhere and everywhere. People in Wisconsin do the same thing to Illinois so I'm not sure how they can justify that. Basically, it just seems like a clear cut case of state pride... clear, poopshoot driven state pride. |

Honestly, I think it depends upon the individual from Wisconsin (or Illinois).
I'm from the Chi-burbs and have gotten comments occasionally from Wisconsin aquaintances before like "I know not everyone from Illinois {drive too fast, buys up property}, and I certainly know you're not like that, but it seems like a lot of Illinois people are rude, or whatever." Thats really all I've gotten personally. I figure if you are friendly and laid back and don't act like a big shot Chicagoan, I really don't think you'll get any kind of this anymosity. I guess since I have family in Wisconsin, and we took trips to Milwaukee without any pretensions that their attractions were any less good than Chicago's maybe thats why I don't fit their image of the obnoxious Chicagoan, but I think it just depends on the individual. My experience is: Southeast Wisconsin, being more populated and urban, just feel rivalry mostly with Chicago, but theres enough interaction across the state line, where its not as big of a deal. Central/southwest Wisconsin: I think its there that I notice a slightl bit more annoyance with tourists particularly around places like the Dells, Door County. But like I said I've never had any of that directed toward me, with people met from those places. Northern Wisconsin: more rural and remote and kind of think of Chicago (and even Milwaukee) as these dangerous, scary places to stay away from. Obviously these are just casual observation and not meant to applied to a whole region! |

I was in Wisco last year with a customer only to hear him complain about how he was about to retire to his little lake house so he could fish until he died etc. He can't do it now because as he says all the "FIB's" move up to Wisco and build huge summer homes at surrounding lakes jacking up property taxes making it impossible for them to afford to live there.
that's my 2 cents worth. |

I live in Wisconsin and have no problem with Illinois people, but the main reason, or at least the main reason that people bring to my attention is how many people from the Chicago area and Illinois come to Wisconsin to use our lakes, state parks, etc for the weekend and go back.
I really don't have a problem with that, but if you have ever tried going southbound on the Interstate on a Sunday in the summer, you know what I mean. It's jam packed and every other plate is an Illinois plate. It does get to be a nuisance, Illinois people overrun Wisconsin in the summer, especially the area I live in, near Wisconsin Dells. I think that Wisconsin should start charging Illinois residents a toll for using our roadways, because the majority of our tourism comes from Illinois. |
