I am looking at this post from the perspective of a "downstater" way down state, in the Saint Louis area. I was not exposed to Chicagoans till I got into college, and boy was that an education in rudeness! Chicagoans in spite of their city are very provincial! I dont know why you guys leave Cook Co., if it's so great?? You come out of your city and you seem lost and so you seem to get defensive and braggy. You do that not only to Wisconsin, but to anyone south of Joliet, or west of DeKalb! Oh, and BTW, there are other things to see in WI besides the Dells and Door County!

On another note, I now live 18 miles from Wisconsin, in the twin cities MN and we get a little of their snootiness too, but not nearly the wrath Illinoisans get! Let's face it, they have a beatiful state and wish to keep it that way!
I'm dizzy.

I spend alot of time up north and live in the far west Chicago (50 miles or so out).I see it like this.Alot of people from Chicago are rude and obnoxious. That's what I see.Unfortunately that's what most people in Wisconsin get to see to form an opinion too.I see it as people have been moving west into our area from the city. They mix with the long time residents like oil and water.I really think it's a Citypeople/Rural People thing but Wisconsin people think that we are all from Chicago. If more people from the smaller farm towns spent alot of time in Wisconsin they might see another side but people who already live in rural areas don't see the need to get away like you do in the city as much.Unless people from Chicago start someday to be a little less rude I think we'll always be FIBs(Wisconsin term) to them up north.I don't blame them based on what I see moving this way.I've never had any issues from anybody in Wisconsin. They've always been friendly to me.

When I lived in further southern Illinois (about 90 miles to STL), Chicagoans would move down constantly to buy a home on the lake, because their lake home would cost what a semi-decent house in a 5/10 neighborhood would cost in Chicago. Then, they send their kids to school, who constantly proclaim "In Chicago...." "In Chicago...."

Then I went to SIU-Carbondale where I had to attend with way too many chicagoans. I worked at Target with one Chicagoan who called someone gay and couldn't understand why he got in trouble for that; "I would never get in trouble for that in Chicago."

I don't think Wisconsinites hate everyone from Illinios. I just think they hate the *******s from Illinois. So, if you feel hated, well, I guess that answers your question.

Good point.Good rule of thumb for people from Illinois, Don't act like a FIB and you won't be treated like one.We might have to wait a couple of generations to see if it works.

This presumes that people don't apply their experience with a few to their perceptions of a whole group. For some it simply a matter of conditioning. Some Illinois-haters are proactively dicky instead of merely reactively dicky. No complaints about the latter; however, the former actually contribute to the problem.

I believe that would a self-fulfilling prophecy ... "I think those people from Illinois are jerks, so when I see one, i'll be a jerk first" thus inviting the person in question to be a jerk back and the cycle of douchbaggery continues.

I have known some Wisconsinites who seem to have learned the anti-Illinois stuff from their parents at a very young age. They don't seem to question. One friend from WI was surprised when reading the Illinois Rules of the Road book, to find out the ROR are very similar to Wisconsin's! They pass along urban legends as if they were true (e.g. a deer hunter from Ill who bagged a billy goat and didn't know the difference) and eventually believe them, no matter how preposterous. Just my opinion. I do have a lot of family in/from Wisconsin that I hear this stuff from.
