Maybe I'm just used to them. But to me, the absolute worst are Boston drivers. They don't slow down. You have to watch for them, because they are not watching for you.

I've never been to Boston, but I've been to many other big cities, and I still think IL drivers are some of the worst. They drive like maniacs, and have no regard for their fellow drivers. I think I drive fairly fast myself, but jeezus, some of these people drive like they are in a race!

My parents moved to Mauston, Wisconsin after retiring. They lived their for over a dozen years before they died. This area is truly rural, but has experienced a recent influx of Illinoians building vacation/retirement homes. I visited them on numerous occasions.
I understand that there is a "FIB" attitude with some of the natives, which I think stems a bit out of jealousy. I think some of this attitude also comes from a feeling of superiority, they live closer to the land. They are outdoor sportsmen (or fancy themselves as such). I still think most Wisconsites are extremely nice. I only heard the "FIB" comments in jest. This was true even when I would go to Bears games at Lambeau Field in the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. If they could stay good natured in those days, that speaks volumes to their attitude towards us "FIBs". As far as our driving habits, I think we're similar to most large urban areas. I have driven in many metro areas in the US, from coast to coast, and I haven't seen a great deal of difference in drivers. |

I think anyone in Wisconsin that seems to have this superior attitude to Illinois needs to take the old saying "Don't bite the hand that feeds you!" into serious and notable consideration!
It makes one wonder what Wisonsin would be like, if it didn't have the constant money flow coming from Illinois? |

It'd be the U.P. then.

Well, the eastern UP is doing OK because it's close enough to Detroit for Detroit money to keep it afloat. The western UP is pretty depressing though -- too far away from Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee and the Twin Cities to have any serious infusion of urban money. It's basically Mississippi with snow and Canadian accents.

I lived in Illinois for seven years (Champaign), and I was aware of the animosity between the two states, but I never heard the term "FIB" before. What does it mean?

Well, I certainly hope they are nice to me when I hop on Amtrak a couple weeks from now to pay Milwaukee a short visit (I've never been there before).

I figured it was something like that! Maybe we should all just try to get along a little better.
