We will be passing through in October and have never seen Springfield. (We are history buffs.) Can you suggest a place to stay that is near the Lincoln attractions? We are okay with chains. Any place we shouldn't miss for dinner? Thanks in advance.

Stay at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel (I think it's owned by Double Tree now). You'll be within walking distance to the Presidential Library/Museum, Lincoln Herndon law offices, Lincoln village, old state Capitol, new state Capitol, etc. I'd recommend Augie's Front Burner for a nice dinner. If you're looking more casual, try Obed & Isaacs brewpub, which has good local beers, live music, lighted bocce ball courts etc. O&I's is also right next to Van Williams, one of the best coffee joints in Springfield. If you're looking for a unique and lovely place for lunch, I'd recommend Incredibly Delicious on 7th street. Also try to take in a horseshoe while you're there. If you've got enough time, a drive out to Lincoln's New Salem is well worth it, especially in the fall, and there are a couple wineries and a brewery right around there.

The Wyndam hotel (used to be the Hilton) is also close to Lincoln attractions. I really like Gallina's Pizza downtown. If you want to try local food, try a horse shoe. It's basically toast with your choice of meat on top, then topped with fries and cheese sauce. People are crazy for horse shoes here. Darcy's is considered the best place to get one but they seem to sell them all over town.

You might be interested in Route 66 stuff. There's a Cozy Dog on 6th street full of route 66 memorabilia.

Stop by Sunrise Cafe for breakfast. It's a little south of downtown (probably a bit too far to comfortably walk), but worth going a few minutes out of your way. It's nothing special, just a good old American diner with a loyal local clientele.

There are a number of good places for lunch or dinner downtown near the Lincoln Presidential Museum like The Feed Store, Gallina's Pizza, Maldaner's, and Cafe Brio - all locally owned and have been in business for years.

There is a great popcorn shop (and other goodies) on 6th street, with lots of gift shops surrounding it.

Also, the State Museum is finally open again and definitely worth a visit if you have time.
