I have been through Danville, and yes it is in very bad shape. The road conditions are horrible, it reminded me of the south side of Chicago. Avoid at all costs.

Although the original poster made her inquiry well over a year ago and I'm sure they've long since made their housing decisions, I echo the sentiments of others that say Danville should be avoided. In recent years Danville has received a large number of transplants from the public housing systems in Chicago. It really is a nasty little city: lots of crime, high unemployment, a corrupt police department, and terrible public schools. To my understanding it was a nice city 40 or 50 years ago, but its best days are now over and I don't see them ever coming back.

Of course, it's a cheap place to buy a home. A couple days ago I happen to read the average price of a Danville home selling on the open market is about $48,000 (and this figure is for 2009 sales).

Don't listen to people who did not actually live there.I lived in Danville for 13 months. My first impression was similar to other posters because I had only seen south Danville.#1 the south side of Chicago has plenty of beautiful areas anyhow, the 2 don't compare.Danville, like any other town has a good area and an area that is suspect. The roads and the houses on the "badder" side of town are awful but North Danville is really nice-I lived right by lake Vermillion and I could fish from my back yard and watch the people on the motorboats.

My job was located at the college on the "badder' part of town and I NEVER had a problem with anyone nor did I ever hear of any major problems. This town looks way worse than it is.

Pluses...Lake Vermillion, cheap houses,DRIVE THROUGH LIQUOR STORE ,a nice city college that has activities(cultural),bars, clubs, lots of nice restaurants.

Minuses....Not very much to do as an adult besides walking Walmart, eating,or getting drunk. You really have to drive to Chaimpaign to have some fun and to find a good mall.

Oh yes,the police station is Corupt..and the transportation sucks so you must have a good working car(not many mechanics around).

^^ Wow, you're really selling me on the place. A drive-thru liquor store -- I'm so there!

Been thru Danville one time and that was less than a year ago on my way to Columbus, OH. I didn't see much that looked bad, but that was a Saturday afternoon.

I was raised in this town. I have family there. A brother, and I hope my mom is still alive. I felt sad when I looked at the town. It looks like the one I grew up in in the 60's and 70's . joannemariedevine@gmail.com please contact if you know Elizabeth A. Dahl at 1209 Griggs. I am trying to find out if she is alive. She is my mother. my brother Robert E Dahl still is at the address I hope.
