I know the utilities are very high because of the size and the age of the place. I checked into it to see about how high it gets in the winter. Are you ready...$400-$600 if your really good $300.
I'm at golfview right now and the highest it got was $190 for 2 months.
I did put plastic on windows to help.
The neighborhood seems a lot nicer looking than here but if your wanting to save for a couple of years make sure you check the utility bill for the kind of place your moving into. I personally would have never thought of it until I heard the complaining. Also I did notice the property tax is high here.
Champaign's utilities went up 20% a couple of years ago or a year not sure.
The taxes seems lower but houses cost more for the size house you could get in Rantoul.
Champaign has a lot of really bad areas unless you can afford an $200,000 home. We can't at least not yet and I promise it wouldn't be wasted in Champaign property.
I want land and home
Hope this helped a little.

I feel by far safer in Rantoul than in Champaign of the over all areas.
Over the last 8 years for which crime data is available, Rantoul and Champaign have had nearly identical rates of rape, theft, burglary, auto theft and arson; in fact, Rantoul has slightly higher rates of each except for rape (owing to the college campus). Rantoul has a FAR higher rate of robbery, nearly twice the rate of Champaign. The only area where Rantoul is decidedly lower than Champaign is murder; and even then, Champaign is well below the national average so it's not like people are mowing each other down with impunity there.

So much for crime being "far worse" in Champaign. If you moved to Rantoul to get away from Champaign's crime rate, you moved to the wrong place and your newfound sense of security is a false one.

Well Im a few weeks in Rantoul.... Its been great so far. Its a very quiet town, not very much to do but thats not any issue for me right now. The complex is a great size for us. The duplexes are very spacious. My rent is only 730 per month for a 3 bed 1 and half bath with basement. I commute to champaign IL almost everyday for my job and its only a 10min commute.

Can any one tell me about apartments called Abbott Acres on Hobson Drive, I checked out their website and it looks good and is very inexpensive. I will be relocating sometime in August or September. Originally from Illinois, but have lived out of state for the past 7 years so I'm a little out of touch with the area.

Just need a one bedroom that allows pets........I recently checked out apartments in Champaign in my price range and they didn't look so great! My son who is a graduate of U of I suggested Savoy, but also told me to stay away from certain apartment complexes in this area. No matter where you go there is good and bad, I prefer a smaller town since I have lived in Los Angeles, Tucson Az and currently living in Tulsa Ok. Crime is everywhere......you just learn the areas to stay clear of and watch your back.

Looking for any help you can provide.

Hobson Drive has a reputation for minor crime, thievery, prostitution, assault, etc. It's kind of a focal point for transient criminal types in Rantoul. I wouldn't worry too greatly for my safety there, but I wouldn't be flashy with portable electronic devices.

I don't see anything wrong with Rantoul. I knew some people that lived there, but I haven't been there in a while. Although I probably live in a better house now than Rantoul had to offer, I used to live in a ghetto. And the way you Champaigners act towards Rantoul just because their houses aren't that great and the people aren't that rich gives me another reason why I hate most suburban people. That "high class" attitude is ****ed up and needs to change.

Thanks for reviving a dead thread to deliver a pious lecture. But I've done my time living amongst Rantucky-style small-minded, small-town trash, and I refuse to ever do it again. You couldn't convince me to live in Rantoul for free. You couldn't PAY me to live in Rantoul, unless it was enough to give me the resources to travel all over the place so I wouldn't have to be there more than a few days out of the month. I don't care if you or anyone else thinks that makes me an elitist, a classist, or if it makes you want to hate me, or whatever. Knowing you hate me won't cause me to lose a wink's worth of sleep.

The town used to be very nice about 15 or so years ago. After Chanute AFB was closed down, things went downhill.

After the housing projects starting getting torn down in Chicago, alot of ghetto people started coming down to Champaign, Urbana, and Rantoul probably due to rents and cost of living being much cheaper relative to Chicago. Still, there are some areas of these towns that are pretty decent. Lots of fast food, but not much finer dining.
