Does anyone know what the wages are like for HVAC mechanic in the St. Louis vacinity? Currently, we live in VA, and my hubby is only making $24 and hour and has been doing this for 30 years. Are the wages better there in the midwest?

Yes. Even non-union technicians can earn upper twenties - if you find the right company. The summers are torrid at best. Quality HVAC service is a blessing in this area.

Even if you plan to live in IL this will likely get more attention in the St. Louis, Missouri forum.
