It's a hard choice.
I'd also suggest Augie's Front Burner, downtown (5th & Adams) - it was hard not to choose it. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner there and it was great!

Was lucky enough to stop by Darcy's while there over Christmas...really miss the 'shoe.

Cafe Brio' and before it was destroyed, Barrel Head on Wabash. Lived in Springfield 10 years ago and loved the atmosphere of that place.

Chanticleer in Euruka. Full menu, moderately priced. Good food, friendly gar, great service.

Kracker's Korner in Havana. Good food, inexpensive compared to most. Yeah, take out too. The hand-made tenderloins are awesome, and. I can still get fish dinners with 2 sides on any Friday night for $6 each. They've been in business for 25 years +/-

Perennial fav: Steak n' Shake for best hanburrger and fries. Not cheap, but birthplace was in Normal, IL about 70-years ago. I believe they are still serving in the original location. Illinois stores at Peoria, Pekin, Lincoln. Bloomington and Springfield; not sure about Champaign. Missouri stores at St. Louis, Sullivan, Springfirld and Joplin; not sure about Jefferson City= columbia.. They build in college towns, but not usually near a college. Strange.....

IMO Steak and Shake has gone really downhill in the past dozen or so years. Their prices keep going up, but the portions keep getting smaller (and chintzier on the fries!)

Many of the older restaurants are in terrible states of disrepair, they hire first time servers so the service is shoddy at best...

bah. i used to love it as a kid, but every time I go now (and I've been to the two in Columbia, MO, at least 4 or 5 in the St. Louis area and one in Springfield IL) I just leave disappointed...
