I am going to say I would retire in the northwest few counties (excluding Stephenson.)
I would probably either stay in Oregon, move to Mount Carroll or Savanna, or Galena. This area of the state is the most geographically diverse area in the state. The history in Galena is also very intriguing, but living in a town that I couldn't drive to the grocery store on Saturday because of an excessive amount of tourists would be quite a con of the Galena area. Pros (the shops, beauty, history.) Oregon is a very nice town, I think I will stay here.

I guess I skipped over "you can not choose the city/town you currently lived in" part of the OP. If I had to pick another town, I would pick Byron. It is only 5 miles away, and similar to Oregon in many ways.

Byron was surprisingly decent on my last ride through there. Nice terrain out there too.

As a retiree with a nomebound patient I have a diferent view. Most seniors want to travel or fish or live near their kids or ??? I like smaller towns with a grocery store and hospital nearby. I favor central Illinois for the history, culture, wildlife, shopping, dining, theater, and the river.. There is something going on all year long. And there is always great photo opportunities because of the area. I'd choose Eureka, Manito or Lincoln, but for a faster pace that isn't metropolitan, I'd look to East Peoria, Farmington, Germantown Hills, Morton or Pekin.
