Moving back to so. Il (Marion, Herrin: school, friendly, live)

I am getting ready to move back to the So. Illinois area in a few months. I am wanting to find a small town between Mt. Vernon and Marion, a friendly town with a good small school for my kids. Any information would be appreciated.

Do not choose Benton. I've heard law enforcement has lost control there.

By the way, I lived in Benton for 22 years, my whole family is still there, and I have no idea what the "I heard law enforcement has lost control" even means. I love the "I heard" part, meaning they don't truly know anything about it.
