Default Moving to Oregon, IL

We are considering a move to Oregon IL. We currently live in the suburban sprawl of Will Co and would like to move to a smaller town and buy a large piece of property to build on. I have visited Oregon many times and love it. Its a beautiful area with the Rock River and all. However I am concerned about living so close to the nuclear plant. Just wondering if anyone knows of any negative effects of living so close to the nuclear plant. I heard from someone that their cat had a litter of deformed kittens and their vegetables don't grow normal. I don't know if there is any truth to this at all. I do have small children and so I am concerned about it. We will be having our own well so I am concerned about water contamination.

Please share whatever you can. Hopefully there are people that live in Oregon/Byron that can share or reassure that all is well there!

I appreciate any feedback.

I have never heard such a thing. I have had a few people buy in Oregon and Byron and they all are very pleased. The schools are nice and has that small town atmosphere. I love the city of Oregon especially fall time when everything starts to change colors. If you have any other questions about the town or other cities let me know.

No, that only happens on the Simpsons in Spingfield. You'll be fine living there. It's a great town.

Thanks Homesinrockford! It seems like such a beautiful area and after much research I am feeling ok about the power plant.

I had family in that area for years. The nuclear plant was visible from their backyard 5 miles away in Mt. Morris. I don't recall any strange vegetables from their garden or kitties with extra legs sticking out of their heads. BTW, if the well water is polluted, it's more than likely not from the nuclear plant but from the fertilizer run-off from the corn and soybean fields.

Oregon is lovely, though, and one of the towns DH and I are considering for retirement.

Oregon is a nice little town to retire in, no doubt about it. Look into the Lost Nation subdivision, which is actually closer to Dixon, but an easy 10 minute drive. I had some family that lived in there and it was gorgeous. There is a large, private lake and the community is gated/watched. Its literally out in the middle of nowhere, so its extremely quiet. Youll see lots of mega-log cabins in that subdivision, as well as normal homes too. Wild turkey, great fishing, nice scenery.... just a suggestion.

Thanks Steve-o, we actually looked there last year and it seems like a very nice community. It was very pretty in there. However the lots were smaller than what we wanted. We are purchasing 10 acres. The land we are buying is pretty near there though. Where we are buying seems like it should be Grand Detour but it has an Oregon address. Beautiful area!
