Default Rentals in Edwardsville Area

Hello... I am planning on moving to the Edwardsville area this fall to attend SIU-E as a graduate student. I was wondering how hard it is to find a house or duplex (1 or 2 bedroom) for $500 or $600/month or so?

I have been searching online and have found very few rentals at all, and most were apartments (only 1 or 2 houses). Also, the rent on these were all above $800. The same goes for surrounding towns. Am I having trouble finding many rental homes because they tend to not advertise online (including the newspaper's website), or because there just aren't many rental homes available below $800/month in the area?

I hope to visit the area soon, but the lack of rental information on the internet has me worried about my choice to attend SIU-E, as I know that finances will be pretty tight as a grad student!

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Rental homes are pricey here, although you may have some luck checking the bulletin boards on the SIUE campus and ads in the Alestle (SIUE newspaper). If you can afford a 'scouting trip' to town, you might have better luck than internet searches.

Maryville, Glen Carbon, or Troy, all nearby towns, might be a little cheaper. Avoid the Cottonwood area as the neighborhood tends to be unsafe.
