Default Southern Illinois Music

Is Country & Western music being played at every public event? Is there an occasional blast of bluegrass somewhere on a Saturday night? If I walk into a record store, will I hear Keith Urban or Merle Haggard? If I walk into a bar will I hear Shania Twain or Patsy Cline? Or both? Are the country stalwarts on some kind of a loop, depending where you go? Do they ever mix it up and play straight-ahead rock and roll? If I pull up next to a pick-up, what is most likely playing? Johnny Cash? Marshall Tucker? Mary J. Blige?

What's the musical temperature there? I'm sure the SIU area has a diverse list, but what might it include?

All of the above, and not much else. If your taste vary....load up the iPod.

If you walk into one of the independently owned cd stores in Carbondale, you probably won't hear country at all. Usually it will be an indie band. If it iscountry, it'll probably be more Old Crow Medicine Show than Keith Urban.

There are a lot of pop and country radio stations in town, but WDBX plays a lot of interesting alternative, indie, and bluegrass music.

Carbondale doesn't have the most interesting music scene in the world, but the Woodbox Gang is a great bluegrass band that plays in the area. At the local bars and college bars, there's a better chance that you will hear pop/classic rock than country.
