Enjoy your hometown son.....lol
My grandfather was beaten and left for dead in Boston in his grocery store. The Chicago area is my adopted home town, and I love it. Now go take a walk in Mattapan, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Brockton, Springfield, Fall River, Lynn, etc. You want murders? Take a look at San Jose and Miami this past week, now go home.

I am considering a move to Illinois. Reading this thread has given me a pause. Is it really that bad in Illinois or just Chicagoland?

I am thinking Metro East outside St. Louis, MO. Belleville, Columbia, Fairview Heights, Swansea, Collinsville, Caseyville, Troy, O'Fallon, Waterloo, Glen Carbon, and Edwardsville all sound nice. Would I be better off in Missouri despite conservative politics?

St. Louis is more violent and dangerous than Chicago. Been that way for years. If you want big city living avoid any of the places you mention, don't have to live in Chicago, you could choose many other cities, DC, Boston, SF, Miami, etc.. If you want small town living there are literally hundreds of choices.

I think rising taxes are a bigger reason to avoid Illinois than crime personally. But if that doesn't concern you then I wouldn't let the crime dissuade you.

I have family living in St. Louis Metro. The City of St. Louis happens to be dangerous with high crime in the northern section. However, some parts of the city and most of St. Louis County are relatively safe just like Chicago has safe areas.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am not interested in living no more than 6 hours away from my family. It is the main reason I am leaving Texas.

While Illinois fits me politically than MO, I am just wondering if I would be better off in St. Louis County than living in Chicagoland and Metro East due to IL's taxes and well-known financial woes. I thought maybe Metro East would be slightly more affordable with lower property taxes. That is why I am asking about IL vs. MO.

I agree. I can handle crime more than rising taxes. Is IL mostly bad only in Chicagoland or is it the rest of the state including Metro East? If Metro East is slightly more affordable with better quality of life, I would be open to living in Metro East. St. Louis is just a short drive for city amenities. Just asking for feedback if I would be better off living in St. Louis County or not based on what I read about IL.

Well, do a housing search and you can see what the property taxes are and see for yourself with hard data.

The state has the lowest bond rating and has a lot of financial issues that are not going away anytime soon.

My (extensive) family that lives there has brutal property taxes compared to what I've had to pay in suburban KC.

Moving somewhere over politics is something I can't quite fathom, every state has it's different areas with that regards anyway.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

If taxes are a worry and you're not fussed on urban living then I'd stick to exurban STL. Low taxes there, alright. IL is going to tax you. It's a progressive state, so it believes in taxes, but it's also dealing with the effects of corruption and is in a giant financial hole due to decades of mismanagement.

On the other hand, your abortion rights will be protected, you won't find people carrying semiautomatic rifles around walmart, and unions aren't being ruthlessly busted.

The crime is Chicago is exaggerated, it’s mostly certain areas of the city (mostly the south), the numbers there are huge, so it skews the numbers negatively for the city. However, even then Chicago doesn’t even make the top 72 most dangerous cities in the U.S., yet so many seem to believe it’s one of the top 5 most dangerous.
