Greenville, Illinois info request
We are considering moving to the small town of Greenville, located between Highland and Vandalia, Illinois. We are interested in small town living within a great community. Could anyone with information about THIS area please let me know their opinions and where I can get more information? I have already been to Greenville's official website which is what got us interested in the town.
Thank you for your time and effort.

I lived in Greenville for 15 years, and then relocated 20 miles West due to job change. Greenville is a college town. It has a 4 year liberal arts private college. It is also a dry town, however, if you care to indulge - there is a package store just outside the city limits. The city is located just off of I-70, is also close to I-64, and also I-55. Approximately 40 miles east of St. Louis. It is a quiet town, several churches, local hospital. The only problem I had with Greenville, is that there isn't much for children/teenagers to do. There is a movie theater, several fast food chains, nice motels. All in all, I think you will like it.

thank you PCruse
Thank you for your input. We currently live in Madison County but looking for a small town in a nearby county. I guess I'm looking for some movie version of a small town where everyone knows each other (in a good way) and participates in town events.
Thank you

This isn't near you, but Ford County has towns like that, Gibson City and Paxton.

Paxtonian
I know we are limited in cities by not moving far, but we want to stay close to family. Thank you for your opinion.

I live in northern madison county and worked in Greenville for 2 1/2 years. I absolutely love the people in the courthouse there. They are really nice and helpful. I cannot say enough about how nice the Judge, his courtreporter, the Circuit clerk and his office, and the State's Attorney. Greenville is beautiful. There are a lot of opportunities for kids there but you have to be supportive and get involved. The schools are okay. I think they are relatively safe and probably score higher than average on test scores. Mostly, they are very middle America with very middle class American values, i.e., h.s. football, church on Sunday, etc. The schools offer band, all kinds of sports, theater, etc. It is a community where you and your children can be involved rather than entertained. The community has a 4 year college with some really great people in psychology and social work, for sure! I've met and dialogued with them.
Perhaps there are drawbacks, but they would not be significant enough to keep me from moving there with children. I think that probably the law enforcement agencies, especially the Sherriff's dept., need more tax base to hire more persons who are well educated.
The churches and clergy are quite active. You might be surprised at how involved this community is with churches.
The hospital is a small community hospital. Some of the doctors are very good. Some of the nurses there are the very best I have ever met anywhere.
I would rate it more favorable than many communities in Madison County because of it's lower tax base, available and reasonable housing, and really, really nice people.
How nice? One evening, late, I had a flat tire and was going to my office to call my husband. A man stuck his head out of a pick-up truck and asked if he could help me. That man was the Judge!
