After a decade of Engineering and Construction, Amtrak trains on the Lincoln service between Chicago and St Louis have been cleared to run at 110 mph over most of the route. While not as fast as Acela or forthcoming Brightline corridors, it will be one of the fastest in the nation, and make travel between the cities, as well as online stops, more convenient.

That is quite impressive. I remember that one used to top out at around 70-75 mph. Of course, Amtrak is not METRA though, in terms of service.

Another notable bit is that the Texas Eagle runs along these tracks for this stretch and its rolling stock can do 100 mph so the speed and reliability improvements help the Texas Eagle as well.

New schedule officially begins today for Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle with some trips making the Chicago - St. Louis trip as short as 4 hours 46 minutes from downtown Chicago to downtown St. Louis on the Lincoln Service. The trips aren't just faster, but should also be more reliably on time. I wonder if there have been any proposals for branching off of this route that could also take advantage of this.
