The lunch/breakfast counters in the Walgreens were way better than the Wags.
I miss the same lunch/breakfast counters in the Woolworths. Those were better than Walgreens.
I remember you could smoke in them even still when I was a kid.

That Walgreens and the whole block is going to be torn down soon for yet more crappy condos.
Hopefully you will get back here before they tear it down.

Shoney's is another one! They had 20+ locations in Chicago area and disappeared after a few short years.

I really only seem to see Shoney's now down south these days. There used to be more in Illinois and Missouri (I think there's one in Indiana)

When you let the bean-counters take over, that's what happens.
Lowest quality ingredients prepared by low-paid kids who could care
less about working = bad food, disappearing restaurant chains.
Don't need to be Nostradamus to predict this.

OMG. The salisbury steak was the BEST! When we would hit Fields for the Christmas decorations every year, we would do the salisbury steak dinner with those yummy mashed potatoes. Man I totally forgot about that until you brought it up!

What about Bill Knapps. There was one at Warrenville and Naperville Rd. Loved that place. They were all over MI and ventured into IL but didn't make it. I also have fond memories of Wags and Shoneys! Not a chain, but I loved Z's pancake house on Roosevelt in Glen Ellyn. Anyone from that area will remember the yummy food
