I am being considered for a lateral transfer from Montana to Rock Island and wondering if its worth moving. Of course the family would be coming along, so schools and those amenities are important. As is the quality of life.

Thanks

Do you enjoy the mountains, natural beauty and outdoor recreation in Montana? If yes, Illinois will be an adjustment. The Mississippi River corridor is quite beautiful in it's own right, with towering cliffs over the river and hilly, forested areas adjacent. Within 50 miles or so on either side, though, you're looking at flat cornfields.

Also, where are you at in Montana? Rock Island is part of a metro area of around 500,000 people, known as the Quad Cities. It's a traditionally industrial community, and the area can be a bit gritty in spots. There are likely more city type amenities available there then where you're at now. There's a new art museum, minor league baseball, a botanical garden, two malls, a popular nightlife district in Rock Island, and an arena that attracts national touring acts.

Its almost 2 years old now, but I'd suggest checking out this Quad City photo thread to get a visual idea of where you'd be moving to.

Wow. I would practically sell my soul to get out of the Quad Cities and move to Montana. I suggest a visit before you make a decision. I'm betting you'll be disappointed.

First of all you should understand that Iowa and Illinois are the #1 and #2 corn producers in the namtion. When you get away from the rivers, you do find a lot of flaf farm land mixed with ranches on land that is less flat. The Mississippi River and the Illinois River both offer two thiings Bluffs, rolling hills, forested areas and floods. If you chose to work in Rock Island, you would probably be better off on the Illinois side for that reason. The 3 cities on the Illinois side are smaller. The largest city in the "Quad Cities" is Davenport, Iowa.

lllinois income tax for the present is a flat 3% tax. Groceries are taxed at 1%. The nearest Children's hospitals are in Chicago and Peoria - which is closer than Chicago and about the size of Davenport. Insurance is peculiar. Not all insurance companies in Illinois will pay for medical care in Iowa - be sure to check it out.

All river towns, and all industrual towns, tend to be a little gritty - but you usually fins some really nice, down to earth folksdespite of the negative cpmmentary, Summers are humid. Winters are cold, humid and very often white.

Five cities anchor the Quad Cities. The actual population on the Illinois side of the Quad cities: Moline, Rock Island and East Moline is approximately 104/5,000. I-80 E will take you to Chicago.
I-74 will take through Peoria and then joins !-55 at Bloomington. If you want to take a ride and go to St.Louis, MO 79 follows the course of the Mississippi River, or I-61 in MO, is relatively new. It ends a few miles outside of St. Lewis at I-70 and Wentzville, MO. By and large, if you chose to move to the Quad Cities, you will be moving to a very pretty part of the US.

If you have the opportunity, do spend a few days in the area before you make a decision. Here are some of the main newspapers between Rock Island, Chicago and St. Louis. It should give you a taste of the state. Excepting Quincy, these daily papers serve large communities.
