Default A Diamond in the rough

About a year ago, I started to ponder about where I wanted to live, once I retired. With still few years left in this body of mine and of meager means I started to research my options. I did not consider the south because the climate is much too hot and out west seemed very distant to me. What I ended up doing was coming back home. My father was raised in Brookport, Illinois and for a city kid, I always had fond memories of a time that has been recaptured. What I mean by recaptured, is that I myself purchased a house in Cairo. I invite people not to fingerpoint, but help revitalize a city that is such a big part of our history. If we do not take the time to do so, we also lose part of ourselves

Cairo is an honest "ghetto".... devoid of opportunity, plagued by the "Thug Life" mentality among its populace, and a victim of ongoing white lfight, without any black leadership filling the vacuum.

Think "East St. Louis", but smaller and more historic-looking in appearance....

I was raised in Charleston, Mo just WEST OF Cairo.

Wow..what a difference a few decades make...
Cairo was a very interesting and unique city back in the day. Going to the downside is the case when the inner structure declines anywhere you go. Same with Charleston, Mo. When the inner structure melts..so does everything else.

No jobs, economic structure, leadership...you call it!!

Just visited Cairo, Illinois. How can the State let this once beautiful little town just fall by the wayside? It is worth saving. All the beautiful old homes boarded up, the medical center boarded up, no downtown, half-burned. What has happened to this town?

Why is it the state's obligation to save an entire town?

What happened to Cairo? To put it simply, it outlived its usefulness. It sprung up at the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers for obvious reasons back when shipping by barge was king. Shipping by barge isn't king any more, and Cairo is too isolated from anywhere else to have much purpose. When you tie your fortunes to a single industry, you'll go right down with it when that industry vanishes.
