Hi- I was wondering about life and living in this area. My sole exposure was back in the mid-80's, when our Penske van broke down on the interstate. Stayed 1 day/nite in Greenup, and went downtown the next day to eat (best ever pork dinner, $3.50!) and use the laundramat.
Realtor.com shows very inexpensive homes that appear pretty nice. I'm looking for retirement options, somewhere in the country, for future reference. TIA Mike Boston |

Hello- I have lived in Greenup my entire life. We are pretty much a bedroom/retirement community. Typical midwestern small town. Inexpensive property values. No crime and good schools. Would be a good place to retire. Almost exactly halfway between Indy and St. Louis when you need some excitement. Also close to Champaign-Urbana and Springfield.
Middle of nowhere; center of everywhere. Let me know if you have any questions. |

Hi-
My wife & I visited Greenup area a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it very much! I may be getting an early medical retirement from work, so we decided to check out some nice places with a much lower cost of living than here in Massachusetts. We looked at homes in Greenup, Casey, Toledo, Marshall and a couple of other towns. All the homes were very reasonably priced, and seemed a good value for the money. Some were "in-town" lots and other had land in the 1-2 acre range, which we prefer. Driving "Old 40" was a blast - fascinating towns the Interstate bypassed. Lots of history, interesting downtowns and plety of photos taken. The people were very friendly, the pace relaxed. Effingham has all the shopping we'd ever need, and the crime rates appear far below average. All in all, very impressive. It will be an option if/when I have to leave my profession. Mike |
