The Grafton Ferry is available to get you into St. Charles easy enough and Pere Marquette Sate Park is just up the road.
I worked in downtown Alton for several years (but not anymore!) and the while the locals like to rose tint their world, it's on the fast track to being the next East St. Louis. Northeast St. Louis to be exact. Avoid Alton like the plague.
By the way, Fast Eddies is highly overrated. Part of the mythology of Alton!

OK am confused .. the person liked the charm and get go of Alton -- move to Grafton ?? Did you forget it floods there ..they have no real grocery store ohhhhhhh and should we bring up Jersey County Taxes since Grafton is in Jersey County ?????
Ok if you like eating in a bar setting yea fast eddies woohoo ..ok but what else does this area have to offer -- a BIG UGLY Cassio in Alton .. that was suppose to help w/ education - what happen to that? Oh thats when they must of purchased the scanners to scan the kids before they go to class ........ or the badges the kids have to wear to show attendance in class! .......
Alton does have charm I grew up there .. there are neat little shops .. old historical places ......... the river road ..Eagles .. not to far from everything .. would I buy a house there NO woudl I live there NO .......... would I send my child to school there.. even with a fabulously UGLY school building ?? OH HECK NO!
Come on people .. look at the area as a whole .. some of you may live there now and have never been out of Alton .......When I first left I wanted to live there again ....... then I seen life outside of my box .. No I dont want to live there .. I go visit .. I go to shop ..but live no thanks

Did somebody from Alton kick your dog this morning?

The OP was asking for opinions of Alton. The truth hurts and sugar coating a dying town would be a disservice to this forum.
Moving from California to Alton is akin to moving from Hawaii to Mogadishu. If that's what you really want, good luck!

You truly believe Alton is akin in any way shape or form to Mogadishu? Sorry, you're the one who needs to try again.

You don't even live in Alton, so if you're just here looking for a fight, go chase down some thugs in Chicago.

Wow, you're right. I can't possibly know anything about a place if I don't currently live there. Thanks for the help.
Had family in Alton for years and I'm pretty sure I would have heard about 17 years of civil war going on ...

Figured I must have hit a nerve with you and skip. A ghetto by any other name is still the same.
You take life and this forum too seriously, I suggest a vacation someplace warm.
