Hm. Well, it's rural. Lots of cute "midwestern" houses. Um...high school basketball is huge. It's pretty close to McKendree University and their new arts center. It's pretty close to St. Louis if you're a Cards fan, love museums, want great Italian food...
Other than that, it's rural and quiet. If you like rural and quiet, you'll be fine. If you're looking for excitement, maybe not so much.
(Not bashing it - I grew up in Raymond, IL, which is maybe 25 - 30 miles north of Gillespie, and I loved it. But that lifestyle isn't for everyone, you know?)

Gillespie
I married someone from Gillespie a few years ago. I lived in a much larger nearby city and when I moved to Gillespie it was pure culture shock! No Walmart, Target, Krogers, Starbucks and the only Hardees in town went out of business! I was frequently late for work due to having to follow a large piece of farm machinery on a narrow two lane road. It took some getting used to (I'm not young and adaptable anymore), but the people took me in and treated me as one of their own. The only drawback was the winters. I had never before lived in a place where fences were put up in the winter to keep the blowing snow from burying your house. Other than the cold winters I think it would be a great place to retire. In fact I'm thinking about it myself. I live in Tennessee now, but I catch myself remembering how peaceful Macoupin County can be.

Ha! Two things that bring back memories...
I miss living in central Illinois farm country, "implements of husbandry", snow fences and all.
