Google and Mapquest are your friends.

I agree. That's what any of us would have to do to give an accurate answer.

I know Google and Yahoo are readily available - I just find that their version of distances isn't always very accurate. They dont take into account what the actual roads are like, etc... so I thought if there was anyone who has made that drive ona few occasions, I would trust their input rather than yahoo or google.

I find mapquest's mileages very accurate. They aren't always accurate on time, but also you have to remember that they calculate ONLY driving time. As my daughter said once, when we were discussing this issue, "You can pee out the window, you can eat in the car, but you have to stop for gas". Sometimes these gas stops can take a lot of time, especially in rural areas where you have to drive quite a ways to the gas station.

My boss whose made the drive says off-peak hours about 5.5 hours with a stop for gas. I have no idea how fast he drives though.

If it was me I would figure 10 hours and leave early on Sunday. This way if I wanted to goof off there is plenty of time and sunshine to do it, and the traffic on Sunday morning is usnally a lot lighter and slower. .

via I-94 Kalamazoo is exactly half way between Detroit and Chicago and I can make it from Kalamazoo to either city (downtown) in 2.5 hours doing the speed limit or slightly under.

Mapquest is insane, though.

The other day my boss and I went to Wisconsin for business. First it told us to get off I-94 onto US-41, which ends up turning back into I-94 anyway... so I have no idea why it said that. Then, it told us to get off an exit which took us through the countryside then spit us back out to an area about 500 feet from I-94, which was our destination. I don't see why it made us take that little rural detour when we could have driven up one more exit and hung a left.

My best time ever from North Avenue to suburban detroit was slightly under 4 hours. But I left at 6am and had absolutely no traffic. 6 hours is my average for off-peak, but be careful. Friday rush hour traffic starts in the early afternoon in Chicago and there is often some stupid road construction project around Michigan City.
