Try the suburbs like Oak Park, River Forest, Naperville, Downer's Grove, and a lot of the Wisconsin area 'burbs.

Also, as previously mentioned, Ann Arbor, MI is VERY liberal but a cheap city and has a lot to offer

In comparison to Chicago, Ann Arbor looks like rural North Dakota.

By "look" I mean compares.

But no, Ann Arbor, especially the suburbs, are nowhere near as expensive as Chicago.
