Thanks for those descriptions. It sounds like Carbondale is a nice little town. It won't be too much of a cultural shock since I come from the suburbs .

I see no reason to resort to name calling. Alot of you Chicago types make statements concerning this end of the state, that you can't substantiate in a meaningful dialogue. I will assume this is true in your case.

I haved lived in Carbondale, Makanda (still Jackson county) and Marion, IL. For college students I thing Carbondale is just what you may expect in any college town...sure there are some rental houses that have been partied in a little too much but the cost of living is pretty fair. Makanda is more rural and Marion is not attached to SIU at all in my opinion. I attended college in Missouri but would drive to SIU for parties . SIU is very self contained and was way more liberal than the conservative life I was used to. I learned and saw alot while there and think it's a great school. The landscape is beautiful and there are plenty of things to do there. I found the economically depressed areas to be away from campus in the rural areas...lot of shutdown coal mines, etc. And as a college student aren't you usually "economically depressed" a little yourself?! Good luck to you.

Well, they have this little thing here where you can search a member's prior posts. And all indications are you live in Chicago.
In the future, please refrain from making deroggatory posts about Southernmost Illinois, unless you're willing to conduct a meaningful discussion concerning your beliefs.

It depends on your age and your interests. There's not much of a nightlife that exists outside of the bars, most of which draws a fairly young crowd. There are a few bars that are great to go play pool and listen to good music at and a couple cool coffee shops, but, don't forget it's small town, not city.
However, it is located at the edge of a national forest with many lakes nearby, great camping, canoeing, rock climbing, and hiking. There are alot of nature spots nearby, say 1 hr roadtrips, that are great...Jackson Falls, Garden of the Gods, Bell Smith Springs, and more. There are now about 15 vineyards just 15 miles south of town that often have wine festivals with music and food. Lots of folks I met that were from Chicago area loved it for those reasons. The town is very, very laid back. Easy livin'--cheap. If you aren't into nature, you may be disappointed as that is Carbondale greatest attributes. I had some great times in my early years, once I hit 24-25, I was ready to move on. Could see going back to raise family.
