Moved here from WI.Property taxes are high in both states.
Income tax in IL is flat 3%. IN WI it was graduated but we paid around 5.2% so that is much better here.

Don't shop in Cook Cty. Total ripff due to outrageous sales tax. I guess the corrupt machine needs to eat too.

You say I am losing credibility? I didnt think I ever had any here. If you built a new home for $500,000 today you would be paying well over $8,000 a year on Property Taxes.I really do hope you are paying $3400 because thats all you should be paying if even that much. You must have owned that home a very long long time.

Property taxes and the state income tax are somewhat reasonable, but it's everything else that bites you in the rear. Property taxes are not that bad in most of Illinois, but it varies based on what municipality you live in. The sales tax is FAR too high, however. The same can be said for gas taxes, hotel taxes, sin taxes, etc. And the user fees are out of control, whether it be vehicle registration, city stickers, tolls, etc. It all adds up. And if you live in the city, be prepared for outrageous parking fines, which are a huge revenue generator. Little things like this will drive you crazy in the city, and make the government feel quite oppressive.

Default Cook County Sales Tax

Don't forget sales tax. Cook County, thanks to the Strogers is the highest sales tax in the nation. About 10%.
