One thing I've noticed about most of those suggested as strong candidates by political pundits and thrown out for consideration here: almost all of them have probably never been south of I-80 for any significant period of time except to go do business in Springfield. Let's not forget this is a statewide office representing statewide interests. I doubt people like Emil Jones, Jan Schakowsky (*shudder*), Luis Gutierrez, Triple-J, etc., have the slightest idea or care about the interests, needs and concerns of anyone south of Peotone.

Does the replacement have to be a politician currently in office?

They really need to pick someone outside of the chicago area. Especially outside of "machine" politics.

I'm not sure why you need a representative with non-Chicago experience. Senator Durbin, is a downstater and is one of the most powerful Senators in the Democratic caucus.

So how much "Chicago" experience does Senator Durbin have? (or Senator Paul Simon?)
