Default Galesburg, Illinois

Hello,

We will be visiting Galesburg Illinois this weekend beginning Saturday, March 17. We have the brochure published by the city for visitors, but wondered if there was anyone who would be interested in giving us their views on what to see and what what life would be like living in Galesburg. The reason for our visit is a thought to relocating there as an early retirement. We are looking to purchase an old home for restoration and preservation.

Thanks,
Pat

if you don't like the sound of freight trains, don't even bother with galesburg. honestly, it's a great town. i guess it would take you quite awhile to get used to waking up in the middle of the night from the damn trains blowing their horns every 20 minutes...

I have lived in Galesburg for 13 years, and personally I am VERY ready to move. In fact the reason I joined this board is to look for a place for my husband and son to move to as soon as our lease is up on our apartment next January.

The reasons that I hate it here though are a) I can't stand cold weather, I'd rather live somewhere warm, b) no jobs, and c) nothing for young people to do. But seeing as you're going to retire, those shouldn't be an issue for you. There are some very nice old homes here, most of which are very affordable. Most of the older people in town love it here. Lots of the teens/20-30 somethings can be rude and somewhat "white trashey" but the folks past that age tend to be a lot more relaxed and friendly. It's a pretty quiet place as well.. except for the trains of course. That's another drawback of the town, it has the heaviest train traffic in all of the U.S. But if you don't mind sitting and waiting for them to go by while you're downtown, or listening to them at night, I'd say it's a pretty nice place to live for those looking to retire.
